Within Without is a soaring new collaboration with influential British jazz keyboardist Jessica Lauren.
From cult solo recordings on Soul Jazz and Freestyle Records to working alongside legends including Jean Carne, James Mason and Dexter Wansell, few players in the UK can match her for sheer energy, charisma and the ability to create magic at a Fender Rhodes.
As long-time friends, Within Without is the third time Scrimshire and Lauren have worked together, blending strong rhythms with emotional atmospheres.
This time the partnership is underpinned by percussion from spiritual-jazz explorer Emanative and Albert's Favourites producer Huw Marc Bennett on bass. All elevated into the clouds with a sweeping orchestral arrangement from Scrimshire himself.
It would be easy to make comparisons with often-cited Scrimshire influences like 4Hero, but there is a definite feel here for early 70s, KPM library records and orchestral jazz from the likes of Charles Stepney.
Within Without is another deeply moving taste of the 6th Scrimshire studio album, due in October 2021.

I'd love to say something, and that's that this album is funky as all heck. Puts me in a good mood, thank you Emma-Jean Thackray. Keep 'em coming. Sean Flanagan
