about

Albert’s Favourites co-founder Adam Scrimshire released his fourth album 'Listeners' in July this year. Musically, 'Listeners' draws from Scrimshire's passion for jazz, soul and electronic music of all styles; from an energetic combination of Afrobeat and garage on 'Won't Get Better', to the lushly orchestrated neo-soul of 'Thru You', and the harmonious jazz experimentations of 'I Never'.

Now we are excited to share the gorgeous broken beat and soul influenced ‘After’. Taking clear cues from the legendary 4Hero, ‘After’ places Steam Down and Hector Plimmer vocalist And Is Phi on top of sweeping strings, emotional piano chords and stuttering drum breaks.

“This track represented possibly the hardest journey on the album, the sense of it really evaded me for a long time. On top of that, the vocals were intensely personal, and we recorded them sat on the floor in my living room, in front of the hi-fi, with the sound up, stacking up many pieces that formed a larger puzzle, that And Is Phi then cut together with me, into what’s here now. That brought technical challenges, but the expression and honesty of the recording was so perfect, I wanted to keep it that way.”

As so much of the inspiration for this track comes from Scrimshire’s broken beat influences we were keen to work with a new producer from the resurging genre. Trev has just dropped an incredible track for the new but immediately noteworthy Dance Regular label, run by Selectors Assemble don and bruk beat-maker, EVM128. This sprawling exploration takes After to all the right places, for energetic dance floors.

From the moment of its release, the album has generated a huge swell of support, with some tastemakers calling it one of the albums of the year. Listeners has received repeated attention on BBC Radio 6 Music, making Tom Ravenscroft’s recommends playlist, receiving support from Mary Anne Hobbs, Huey Morgan, Steve Lamacq and featuring as an Album of the Day in early August. Scrimshire has provided a guest mix for Ravenscroft’s Friday night show and even visited BBC Radio 2 for a “Take 5” interview with Jamie Cullum.
